Kailua Kona, often referred to as “Kona” by the locals, is the main western city, population 34,000 (2012), of the Big Island of Hawaii. It is nestled on the western coast of the Hualalai Volcano. In ancient times, this area was considered the premier place to live due to the excellent weather and good water. Many kings made their homes here.
