ITSUKUSHIMA SHINTO SHRINE _ 0481

IMG_4000 The island of Itsukushima, in the Seto inland sea, has been a holy place of Shintoism since the earliest times. The first shrine buildings here were probably erected in the 6th century. The present shrine dates from the 12th century and the harmoniously arranged buildings reveal great artistic and technical skill. The shrine plays on the contrasts in colour and form between mountains and sea and illustrates the Japanese concept of scenic beauty, which combines nature and human creativity. http://whc.unesco.org/ IMG_4001

SAINT JOHN U.S VIRGIN ISLANDS _ 0480

IMG_4012

St. John was first settled by the Arawak Indians who had migrated north from coastal Colombia and Venezuela around AD 300. The Arawaks inhabited the island until around the year AD 1300, when they were driven off by the more aggressive and warlike Carib Indians. Extensive archaeological work has been undertaken from 1996 to the present at Cinnamon Bay. The artifacts from this dig are being studied and should yield more detailed information on pre-Columbus civilization in the US Virgin Islands

MATHA BRAE RIVER _ 0478

IMG_4024

The Martha Brae River is a river of Jamaica. It is located (primarily?) in Trelawny Parish on the north coast of Jamaica, towards the western edge, about 6 miles south of Falmouth, Trelawny, Jamaica. The river features rafting. A small village west of the river is named Martha’s Brae because of this nearby river. Northwest of the village of Martha’s Brae is Gun Hill where judge John Bradshaw was reportedly re-buried by his son, James Bradshaw, to prevent desecration of his father’s remains by Charles II of England.
